Description
We are seeking a Manager to both work and oversee the day-to-day operations of our 850-acre hay, registered and certified Brahman and F1 cattle, goats and pecan operation. The most successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence in the field, is smart, willing and, critically, able to learn new skills. We are looking for a candidate that wants to grow with our business and who feels responsible for its overall well-being. As a hands-on leader, this person will be responsible for the routine maintenance of existing operation and support other agricultural projects as we bring them online (starting a vineyard in spring of ’23 and looking to develop a perennial barley operation). Integrity, and a very strong work ethic are a must; a background check and reference search will be done prior to extending an offer. This position is hands on – meaning the candidate will be doing much of the actual work, but will also supervise support staff. Owners live on site and contribute heavily. The following duties serve as a baseline description for the role (but there always seems to be more to do): • Manage Registered and Certified herd of Brahman cattle (hands on skills required here) this includes ensuring they stay healthy, breed successfully with calves thriving. This is not a commercial stocker operation, so meticulous record keeping is required. • Market replacement heifers bulls and steers. • Build and maintain required infrastructure (mostly maintain and improve as this is an existing operation): fencing, water troughs, pens, etc. • Perform routine checks and maintenance of the infrastructure. • Control predators (yep--hunting/trapping). • Manage pasture development and maintenance and production of the coastal hay. • Apply herbicide and fertilizer of grounds, pastures and hay fields • Coordinate and manage onsite contractors for large agricultural projects as needed, • Help with agricultural and technology decisions with a bias towards sustainable techniques • Oversee and execute the pecan business • Find and manage ranch support labor as needed. • Will require manual labor on a regular basis. The successful candidate will enjoy a competitive salary including bonus and ultimately profit sharing for demonstrated excellence, paid vacation and holidays, 401K matching and optional on-site housing only after a trial period. Starting pay commensurate with skills and abilities.
Qualifications
Skills and qualifications: • 5+ years of demonstrated success in ranch management and maintenance. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in a relevant field with good grades may substitute for some of the required experience. • Must have demonstrated excellence in cattle care and management for a breeding operation (this is not a commercial stocker enterprise). • Must be able to perform and manage with quality, respect and integrity. The manager will often be the face of the ranch and we want these characteristics to be obvious. • Must understand pasture development and care. • Must have experience in or at least interest and knowledge in sustainable techniques • Self-starter, highly motivated, honest and able to complete projects with limited or no direct supervision. • Must be able to both give and follow instructions and communicate effectively with support team and ranch owners. • Must be able to operate (perform maintenance is a plus) all relevant ranch machinery (tractor, skid steer, boom sprayer, planter, mower, baler, etc.) • Must possess or be able to obtain, within six months of employment, a Political Subdivision Pesticide/Herbicide Applicator’s license issued by the Texas Department of Agriculture. • Must be literate with the computer and have proficiency with Microsoft office suite of Tools including Word, EXCEL, and email.
