Description
Scope of Job To provide responsible supervisory and technical skills for the distribution, oversight, and coordination of maintenance of outdoor laboratory research/teaching facilities, supplies, and equipment in departmental laboratories. Responsible for the supervision of all aspects of the operations of scientific teaching laboratories and maintaining thorough knowledge of safety regulations, and departmental/university regulations, policies, and procedures. Description of Duties Supervises teaching assistants, lab instructors and other lab personnel in academic science labs, including outdoor agricultural and environmental lab spaces on campus. Supervises, schedules and performs lab set-ups/ and tear-downs. Supervises, schedules, and coordinates and may perform maintenance and operation of indoor, and outdoor lab facilities (including groundskeeping). Supervises setup and assists with performance of demonstrations and outreach to the public and students. Supervises and performs (with faculty) basic building tasks for aquaculture and irrigation systems. Assists with faculty or student research. Ensures reagents and disposables are stocked, instruments are available and working, and waste is disposed. Occasionally operates power tools and light machinery necessary for temporary construction, repairs, and operations of outdoor research/teaching laboratory facilities. Orders and receives laboratory materials, within the limits of the departmental budget. Maintains, inspects and supervises laboratory classrooms for safety regulation compliance, security, and equipment maintenance. Maintains equipment, supplies and chemicals inventory and orders as needed. Ensures proper labeling of chemicals and proper disposal of chemicals, broken glassware and laboratory specimens. Provides technical assistance to faculty and students regarding the use of tools and other equipment. May require driving to procure materials/supplies or travel to set up demonstrations or experiments. Coordinates reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities. Recommends equipment purchases for labs. Maintains participant records. May develop laboratory syllabi. May perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Preferred Education Master’s degree in agricultural, biological, earth, environmental science, or a related field from an accredited university. Required Experience Two (2) years experience in the preparation of teaching materials, laboratory supervision, laboratory instruction or performing directly related duties. Equipment Basic laboratory equipment including microscopes, balances, ovens, etc.; and some advanced equipment as needed with training provided. Groundskeeping equipment, including lawn mower, weed trimmers, hedge trimmers, etc. General trades’ tools, such as screw drivers, hoe and shovel, rakes, wrenches, pliers. Hand-held and power tools, including drills and saws. Use of standard office equipment, including personal computer and software including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, and Google Chrome for entry of timecard data, basic recordkeeping, basic data entry, communication of responsibilities, and preparation of simple reports. Working Conditions Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Normal laboratory conditions but will require frequent work outdoors in a south Texas climate. Sometimes requires working with hazardous equipment and materials or in hot and humid environments, such as greenhouses, gardens, and outdoor nurseries. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Other Requires the ability to drive a car for local or distant travel for consultation, training, meetings, or on-site demonstrations.
