Description
We are seeking a Manager to both work and oversee the day-to-day operations of our 850-acre pasture, hay, registered and qualified Brahman and F1 cattle breeding and goat operation. The most successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence in the field, is smart, willing and, critically, able to learn new skills. We are looking for a candidate that enjoys hands on action, wants to grow with our business and who feels responsible for its overall well-being. There is plenty of room for growth and development as we also have a pecan operation, are starting a vineyard and are looking to plant perennial barley for a future brewing operation. Integrity, and a very strong work ethic are a must; a background check and reference search will be done prior to extending an offer. This position is hands on – meaning you will be doing much of the actual work, but will also supervise support staff. The following duties serve as a baseline description for the role (there always seems to be more to do): • Manage herd of Brahman (hands on skills required here) this includes ensuring they stay healthy, breed successfully with calves thriving. This is not a commercial stocker operation, so meticulous record keeping is required. • Ranch maintenance, to include pasture development, cross fencing establishment and maintenance, routine checks and maintenance of the water troughs, predator control (hunting/trapping). • Manage pasture development and maintenance and production of the coastal hay. Herbicide application and fertilization of grounds and hay fields, • Coordinate and manage onsite labor and contractors for projects as needed • Help with agricultural and technology decisions with a bias towards sustainable techniques • Will require manual labor on a regular basis. • (growth area) Oversee the pecan business (contractors likely doing the actual work) • (growth area) Help us with our vineyard operations (planting in spring
Qualifications
• 5+ years of success in the field. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in a relevant field with good grades may substitute for some of the required experience. • Must have demonstrated excellence in cattle care and management for a breeding operation (this is not a commercial stocker enterprise, records are critical). • Must understand pasture development and care • Must have experience in or at least interest and knowledge in sustainable techniques • Self-starter, highly motivated, honest and able to complete projects with limited or no direct supervision. • Must be able to both give and follow instructions and communicate effectively with support team and ranch owners • Must be able to operate (perform maintenance is a plus) all relevant ranch machinery (tractor, skid steer, boom sprayer, planter, mower, baler, etc.) • Must possess or be able to obtain, within three months of employment, a Political Subdivision Pesticide/Herbicide Applicator’s license issued by the Texas Department of Agriculture. • Must be literate with the computer and have proficiency with Microsoft office suite of Tools including Word, EXCEL, and email; knowledge of Access is a plus. The successful candidate will enjoy a competitive salary including profit sharing/bonus, paid vacation and holiday time, 401K matching and optional on-site housing (after a trial period). Starting pay commensurate with skills and abilities. We understand the importance of balance and we do our best to be flexible on hours. However, this is a 5 1/2 day a week job. Herd (minimal hours only) need attending on the weekends.
