- The Stuart Land and Cattle Company of Virginia, Inc (SLCC) is seeking a Farm Manager. This is a unique, rewarding, and challenging opportunity to help lead the oldest continuouslyoperating cattle ranch in the country. We are looking for a self-motivated, thoughtful, experienced, and adventurous candidate with a shared commitment to our vision for delivering excellence in animal health, beef quality, soil and water conservation, and staff enrichment. We are looking for a career oriented candidate who is positioned to grow with our company. The Farm Manager will coordinate the farm’s daily operations, supervise staff, and contribute to strategy development and long-term planning. This position will report to the General Manager. Located on 16,000 acres in scenic Southwest Virginia’s Russell, Tazewell, and Washington counties, SLCC has a 1,450 cow herd and is one of the largest cow/calf operations in Virginia. Our company has a rich history of leadership in the cattle industry and a deep commitment to natural resource conservation. • Daily management and operation of 16,000 acre cattle ranch • Ownership of animal health and nutrition, breeding, calving, grazing management, and soil health • Develop, implement, evaluate, and adapt systems for farm management and continual process improvement • Commitment to and delivery of excellence in staff development • Ownership of record keeping and data management. Contribute to data analysis, interpretation, and on-farm action • Oversee various other farm related tasks such as equipment and tractor maintenance, procurement of feed and supplies, coordination of vendors and contractors, maintaining fences, watering systems, other infrastructure, and more
- Qualifications
- Must be self-motivated, hard-working, professional, accountability-oriented, and actively interested in learning • Knowledge and demonstrated experience in overseeing complex cattle operations. Must be an excellent cow herd manager • Strong skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, operating within protocols and budgets, multitasking, time management, and allocating resources and materials to meet project deadlines and goals • Experience with maintaining, operating, and troubleshooting farm equipment/resource systems (e.g. tractors, hay equipment, water systems, fence, etc.) • Very comfortable with technology and back-office systems such as spreadsheets, email, and reports/data • Excellent communication and people skills. People management skills are equally important as cattle management skills for this position. You should be ready to mentor your team and lead by example
